Monday, 1st June – Spent an hour and a half on the telephone with the people from the Ordnance Survey trying to get their maps onto my computer screen, but even they couldn’t do it.

Tuesday, 9th June – Went through my computer, erasing all the documents that the machine had duplicated. I found surprisingly few.

Sunday, 14th June – Worked out that there are at least a thousand items in my list of things to do, of which I cannot hope to do more than a handful.

Monday, 15th June – My latest frying pan started sticking to the bacon less than six weeks after I bought it. Frying pans used to last for years.

Set off at 5.0 a.m. for a walk along the slopes of Castle Hill and found a few places that I had never been to before. Took a photograph of a flight of steps with wild flowers on either side.

Tuesday, 16th June – Typed ‘google translate’ into the computer and translated the first sentence of Happy Memories into French, Then I translated the French back into English and found that the resulting sentence was identical to the original.

Looked up ‘British cartographers’ on the internet. Only eighteen people were listed, and I was one of them! There must be thousands of people who are more suitable for inclusion in the list than I am.

Selected my favourite scenes from a wonderful television programme about Abba and the Carpenters, and highlighted the scenes ready to copy them to the disc. Then I noticed that I had selected a sequence that I didn’t want to keep, so I tried to erase it, but in doing so I erased all the other scenes. My only hope is that one day the programme will be broadcast again.

Thursday, 18th June – Watched a very good programme about Arthur’s Seat and thought of sending the relevant panorama to the presenter, but when I looked him up on the internet, I learned that he was dead.

Sunday, 21st June – Received an email saying that the Old Harlovians had ceased to exist because there is nobody to run it. It was mentioned in the email that Harlow College opened in 1862 and closed in 1965.

Watched a version of the story of the Pied Piper in which all the dialogue was in rhyme.

Tuesday, 23rd June – Walked along the river to the south from my home and took a photograph of a black oval insect that I was unable to identify. It had five orange v-shaped markings along each side and four white spots in between.

Wednesday, 24th June – A man came to fit a new front door to the flat. It is now possible to shut the door quietly and to shut the door without locking it, but there is now no knocker or doorbell, and it is almost impossible to push soft letters through the letter box. The man said that I could contact him if I had any problems, but I don’t know how to do this.

Thursday, 25th June – Managed to track down the organisation that fitted the new door, and they were able to stick the knocker back on.

Friday, 26th June – It has been unusually hot lately.

Sunday, 28th June – Finished watching the western called ‘The Big Trail ’, which was made in 1930. It captured the atmosphere of its time better than any films made more recently.

Monday, 29th June – Worked out that there are about three hundred items in the list of my possessions that I use when I want to find things.

Tuesday, 30th June – Telephoned K.T.D., and they were able to get Ordnance Survey maps onto my computer screen using home connect without doing the complicated things that the Ordnance Survey said that I would have to do. My other problem- that I couldn’t get the printer to work- I solved without any help from K.T.D., although I don’t know how I did it.
