Wednesday, 2nd April, 2025 – Went to the Wainwright Facebook site and found some photographs of myself on Scout Scar. Then I noticed that one of the photographs was moving, so I turned up the sound, and I could hear myself talking. There was also a beautiful photograph of the scenery.

Saturday, 5th April – Went to Booths, where I met the lady who remembered two of my Dorset books. She said that she saw me several times in the Lake District. I knew that I had something to say to her, but I couldn’t remember what it was. Luckily she spoke to me again later and I remembered that I had to tell her how to find my other books in the internet.

Sunday, 6th April – Went back to Slape Lane to take photographs. I chose this day because sunshine was expected, but I got better photographs before the sun came out. There was a panorama engraved in metal that I didn’t notice when I came here before. Some of the view is now obscured by trees.

Monday, 7th April – Went to the town hall and offered to pay for repairs to the wall that I had accidentally damaged. I was directed to South Lakes Housing, where I was told that they will be in touch.

Friday, 11th April – Started using my new computer. I find it much more difficult to use than the old one.

Monday, 14th April – Phoned K.T.D., who corrected two documents that had been spoilt by transferring them from the old computer to the new one.

Tuesday, 15th April – Went through the contents of my new computer and found hundreds of documents that had been spoilt. I phoned K.T.D. again and was told how I can make the necessary corrections myself. A surveyor from the council called and said that he could tell from the vegetation that the damage to the wall was not my fault because it occurred a long time ago.

Thursday, 17th April – Took part in an online survey about former pupils of Buckhurst Hill County High School.

Saturday, 19th April – In the morning, I couldn’t get anything on the screen of the new computer except a photograph, and I couldn’t telephone K.T.D. because they are closed at weekends. Eventually, I thought of consulting what I had written in the old computer and found out that the thing to do was to press Ctrl, Alt and Delete together. I tried this and it worked, enabling me to finish my article on Kendal in the Nineteenth Century.

Sunday, 20th April – Sent an eightieth birthday card to my sister.

Tuesday, 22nd April – Went on a five-and-a-half-mile walk with the Kendal Ramblers from Arnside village to Arnside Knott and Arnside Tower in beautiful weather. The best part of the walk was back along the shore, where I had never been before. I tried to photograph the rock formations at Blackstone Point, but I couldn’t get the camera to work, although it worked at Arnside Tower. Some people from our group spoke to someone who was familiar with my website, but unfortunately, I was not one of those people. I would have liked to know how much of my website had been read.

Wednesday, 23rd April – Spend an hour and twenty minutes on the phone to K.T.D. trying to get the printer to work.

Thursday, 24th April – Derek Cockell phoned to say that the latest edition of Pennine Way Companion was published today as planned. As this was not mentioned on the Wainwright Facebook site, I sent them a message telling them about it.

Friday, 25th April – Went to the Wainwright Facebook site, but I couldn’t find my message there. A man from K.T.D. called and said that the only reason the printer didn’t work was that it was connected up wrongly. After he had gone I still couldn’t get the printer to work, but a final telephone call to K.T.D. enabled me to print my article on Kendal in the Nineteenth Century.

Saturday, 26th April – Walked along the route described in my article comparing it with the print-out, and found a few mistakes.

Sunday, 27th April – Read on the internet that just as acceleration is the rate of change of velocity, so jerk is the rate of change of acceleration, and jounce is the rate of change of jerk. I never encountered these terms when I studied physics at university or in any of the books on the subject that I have read since.

Tuesday, 29th April – Went on a nine-mile walk with the Kendal Ramblers from Barbon to Brownthwaite Pike and Bull Pot of the Witches. Both these places are visited on the first walk described in Walks in Limestone Country. It was fine and sunny all day. We returned to Barbon via Fellfoot Road, which starts off as an unmetalled road, becomes a path and then becomes an unmetalled road again. Somebody drew my attention to a number of square stone enclosures that were too small to be sheepfolds. Each of them contained an enormous boulder. I was told that these were put there by Andy Goldsworthy. I was frequently left behind because I couldn’t walk as fast as the other people. The last time this happened a lady stayed behind to talk to me and I showed her how to find my website.

Wednesday, 30th April – A lady from the council phoned to say that I won’t have to pay for repairing the wall.
