Saturday, 4th October – Went on a six-mile walk with members of the Wainwright Society from Glenridding to Silver Point in the wind and the rain. I didn’t pay for parking the car at Glenridding because I couldn’t find out how to do so. Then Helen turned up and showed me where I could park without paying. I gave her my selected scenes from television from 31st May to 4th October of this year. From time to time, members would remove branches that had been blown onto the path. Identified a fungus called a cep, which is also known as a penny bun. I found that I enjoyed the walk just as much as I do in fine weather.
Friday, 10th October – Discovered that it was incredibly easy to copy videos from the computer to a memory stick.
Saturday, 11th October – Walked along the Towpath Trail in Kendal and identified an eyed ladybird.
Sunday, 12th October – Looked myself up on the internet and found all sorts of passages from my website and diary. I can’t understand how these passages came to be chosen.
Tuesday, 14th October – Went for a five-mile walk with the Kendal Ramblers from the village of Hartsop to Brock Crags and Angle Tarn, where some members of our group went swimming. We came back via the new footbridge at the foot of Hayeswater. I found walking uphill very difficult.
Friday, 17th October – Finished reading my website. I found a sequence of three paragraphs that were repeated. The site has been visited more than 170,000 times, and yet nobody has thought to tell me about this.
Saturday, 18th October – Found my sent emails, which I haven’t been able to read for months. I have no idea how I did it.
Tuesday, 21st October – Collected my niece, Sarah Jane and my nephew Martin’s daughter, Amy, from the Beech Hill Hotel on Lake Windermere. It took me a long time to find the hotel because it was much farther south than I expected. I later found that it was named on the Ordnance Survey map. When we reached my home, I showed them the latest half-hour of my selected scenes from television and gave Amy selections from 1984 to 2014 for posterity because she is likely to be around for longer than most people. I couldn’t give her more recent ones because I am having problems with them. I also showed them some of my photographs. Then we went for a walk on Scout Scar, where it poured with rain.
Wednesday, 22nd October – Walked the whole length of Troutbeck village with Sarah Jane and Amy and walked up Nanny Lane to Wansfell Pike. Stopped to talk to someone who recognised me.
Friday, 24th October – Listened to two eight-minute radio programmes about Wainwright in which Chris and Priscilla took part. I wouldn’t have known about these programmes if it weren’t for the Wainwright Facebook site.
Received an email from the editor of the Wainwright Society magazine saying that they are planning to publish my article in the form of a booklet to accompany the magazine.
